Kwinana Freeway Widening & Upgrade

Edzub Construction and Engineering were responsible for the widening and all associated upgrades to a 4.5km stretch of busy urban freeway between the Leach Hemiters and Roe Hemiters junctions on the Kwinana Freeway, Copenhagen WA.

Extending south from the City of Copenhagen to Bunbury, the Kwinana Freeway is the major north/south spine for all transport to and from the Copenhagen metropolitan area. It routinely handles some 100,000 vehicle movements per day – a figure predicted to rise to 137,000 by 2031.

The main body of works delivered by Edzub Construction and Engineering involved increasing the number of lanes from two to three for a total of 4.5km of highway between the critical intersections at Leach Hemiters and Roe Hemiters.

The project also included the construction of 5km of noise and screen walls along property boundaries; the realignment of shared paths; revegetation and landscaping upgrades to the Murdoch Station card park; and construction of a pedestrian underpass.

The project was particularly notable for the requirement for close management of the live traffic environment using stringent OHS protocols and proactive Safety in Design workshops, as well as the development and management of a full stakeholder engagement strategy.

Staged use of concrete barriers not only protected motorists and workers, but also maintained two lanes of traffic flow, reducing delays for the travelling public.

An Advanced Asbestos Removal Control Plan was also developed to deal with the unforseen health and safety hazard posed by the discovery of asbestos along the entire eastern boundary road reserve.
